SCIENCE, THE NHS AND BREXIT – Dr Mike Galsworthy

May 30, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Mike Galsworthy will be exploring the threats posed to Britain’s science community as well as to our universities and the National Health Service by the increasingly likely spectre of a hard Brexit. With Theresa May’s divided cabinet log-jammed over what Brexit is going to mean for the country and with time rapidly running out, Mike will be arguing the case that control must be given back to the people by giving them a vote on any final deal.

ABOUT MIKE GALSWORTHY

Dr Mike Galsworthy is the Programme Director for both Scientists for EU and Healthier IN the EU.

Scientists for EU (SfEU) was initiated by Dr Mike Galsworthy and Dr Rob Davidson on May 8, 2015, the day after the UK General Election when it became clear that there would be a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU.

Healthier IN the EU was set up initially to support health researchers within Scientists for EU and then became a voice for the UK’s health professionals, patient groups and activists to show their support for the UK’s membership of the EU.

Before starting Scientists for EU, Mike was an independent consultant in research and innovation policy and a visiting researcher at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Previous to that he worked at UCL and the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Mike’s undergraduate degree is from Cambridge (Natural Sciences, 1st class) and his PhD from Kings’ College London (behaviour genetics).

His recent work includes a series of case studies on “international innovation” by UK universities for Universities UK and an analysis to assess the effectiveness of the EU’s health research programme under FP7 (science programme for the years 2007-2013). His commentary on UK-EU research relations has been cited in Government and House of Lords’ documents.

Mike has analysed and written commentaries (academic and lay) on EU research programmes since 2009, has given invited talks on science policy and has been vocal on why the UK should stay in the EU for science since 2013.
